All about the Google Phone (Nexus One)

Its nearly Christmas holiday time for us here at GadgetLite, so we thought we better cover one more thing thats really been hot and trendy for the last two weeks in the technology world. The Google Phone aka Nexus One, by now, all gadget fans will probably have heard of how amazing it is.

While the hype may be fading since we now know that its definitely real and not just a concept as evidenced by FCC approval, its interesting to see what people who have seen the actual phone think of this monstrous phone!

To sum up, the “uncertain” hardware specs of the Nexus One that are known at this point are largely what you would expect, far more superior than many phones currently available on the market. Google has been planning on launching a phone for sometime and dare I say ever since Android OS was launched or even before that. So the Nexus One would naturally be expected to have impressive specifications.

Pictured to be running Android 2.1 (also see video below), the specs include a “very likely” 1Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor which means it will have a CPU that runs twice as fast as any Google Android handset available. More specifically, that means the Droid.

Its quite certain that it will be a quadband phone with GSM/GPRS/EDGE and UMTS/HSUPA with 850/1700/1900 frequencies. Its also been described to have a 4.3″ capitative touchscreen display with OpenGL ES 2.0-capable graphics and a five megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash, and the brand behind it by now as we all know is definitely HTC. Other on board goodies include a microSD card slot, an accelerometer, a proximity/light sensor, a magnetic compass, and a combination bluetooth 2.1 and WiFi 802.11n and FM radio.

Here’s what the folks at Engadget have said so far about the Android 2.1 OS after checking out the Google Phone for the first time…

Just like we’ve heard before, the updated OS features new 3D elements to the app tray, as well as an extended amount of homescreens, though it looks like the lock screen / mute is the same as in Android 2.0.1. Additionally, there’s now a new grid icon at the bottom of the homescreen, which when pressed brings up a webOS card-style preview of all homescreen pages…

Here are two more shots specifically showing you what apps you’ll expect to see on the Nexus One, and of course you’ll notice Google Maps Navigation which is Google’s turn by turn free sat nav application which first debuted with the Droid:

And here’s a hands on video featuring the Nexus One…

Earlier on, BGR also featured this photo, just check out how slim the Nexus One is going to be! Understandably, the Google Nexus One won’t have a full QWERTY, so it would be thinner anyway but this seems abit ridiculous… Note: It has no chin!

And if you compare it to the iPhone or the HTC Hero, here’s what it’ll look like.

Lastly here are two shots of what the Google Nexus One’s box will be like, I know its silly but this just goes to show how excited us geeks are about the phone – maybe its the Christmas spirit!

While you’ll unlikely see the Google Phone in your stocking this Christmas, overall, you’ve seen the specs, the likely ones and the unconfirmed ones and how impressive its looking so far. You really do get the feeling that Google is aiming high and hoping to get straight to the top once their phone is announced, however, when is that going to be? At this moment, Google still remains silent about the Nexus One, but as rumores have it, it should be announced by the coming 5th of January so that probably means it should be in time for the CES 2010.
